It doesn’t take much to get stuck in writing or in life. Believe it or not, we were stuck in a very small amount of mud out in the bush on a trail that my husband had recently been helping to carve out. There was no way to turn around, so trying to back out uphill was part of the problem and every time he tried to go forward or backward, it just whipped the soil into a mucky, slick mess.
I was not relishing the prospects of having to walk ten miles to get home, but really, we brought the situation upon ourselves. First of all, the trail is for ATVs, not trucks. Secondly, the tires on my husband’s ‘hunting’ truck were pretty much bald – certainly not meant for off roading. Third, and possibly most relevant, was the amount of rain we’d had recently.
It kind of reminds me of life. Perhaps we choose to take a trail we actually shouldn’t be on in the first place. If you know you shouldn’t, then don’t take the risk! Sometimes we aren’t properly equipped for the challenges ahead, as in the case of the bald tires. Make sure you’re not leaping into a situation before you are ready. Or, maybe circumstances are just simply beyond our control. Sometimes stuff happens and there isn’t much we can do about it.
I’m happy to report that we eventually made it out. We were about to give up because we were just digging a deeper hole, but my husband just kept on trying, adjusting the wheels where needed until we managed to make it to dry ground. Perhaps this is the best lesson of all: Never give up!
