Musings On Social Media Marketing

How TikTok, Instagram and others are changing how we market

I’ve been trying to be more visible on Instagram for a while now, following the advice of influencers and others. I’m not sure how successful I’ve been, but I am more engaged myself, and that must be a good thing, right?

I’ll be honest. I balked at the idea of jumping on board yet another Social Media platform and stubbornly held out for years. Literally. When I finally gave in, I was probably behind the curve, but I have no regrets.

I admit that I actually enjoy using Instagram now. It’s is kind of fun, and the advantage is it also posts to my Facebook Author page so it’s a win-win in terms of covering the bases. I’m still not that good at it, and I know I could do a lot more to leverage its effectiveness, but for me, that’s not what it’s all about. I’m finally comfortable there and actually enjoy scrolling through my feed to see what others have to say.

But now… Tiktok!

There’s been A LOT of hype about authors using TikTok. Apparently, TikTok still hasn’t limited peoples’ reach like FB & Instagram have, so the potential to gain followers is still huge. I figured TikTok was all about dance videos or silly stunts, so didn’t pay much attention. I also was under the impression that it was for a younger set. Well, it turns out both of those assumptions are false. Authors are using “BookTok” to market themselves and their books in some pretty creative ways. I’ve watched a few of these videos and was impressed. I actually felt like looking up some of the recommended books. I’ve also watched short videos on getting started and I can see the appeal. Kind of…

I set up an account and at the time of this writing have posted three – count them – three videos. I decided I didn’t want to be stubborn this time like I was with Instagram. However, I don’t want to become a slave to Social Media, either. It’s a balancing act, for sure.
