Remembering…

Reflections on Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day. Some people wonder why we still bother. I, for one, refuse to forget.

We have so much to be thankful for, not the least of which is our freedom. I was substitute teaching the other week and the Social Studies 10 class was learning about Hitler’s Nazi regime. Some of the first hand documentation was unbelievable. Yes, I knew the history already, but to be faced with such outright hatred and disregard for human life had me thinking all over again. One of the questions for students was, “What do you think life would be like today if Hitler’s Regime had lasted ‘1000 years’, as he claimed?”

I am glad not to have to face that reality. Through the loss and suffering of other brave men and women, I don’t have to face it. Their sacrifice wasn’t for nothing, but it is now up to us to instill that sense of gratitude in a younger generation… lest they forget.
