Coming up with just the right cover can be a challenge. It was no different for this latest soon to be released novel, THREE STRAND CORD. I knew I wanted something that clearly represented the number ‘three’, but just how that would look, I wasn’t sure.
Originally I had three ‘feet’ showing at the bottom of the cover. Only the feet were showing, not the girls themselves. Still, one author friend pointed out that it looked juvenile and there was just something about it that didn’t sit right. I trusted her opinion and started scouting for something else.
Next came the sun-bathers. The first cover was a very ‘clean’ version with an all white background. It seemed rather stark, however, so other elements were added to the final version, like the Roman Colosseum and some background colour.
I also considered this photo of three friends. I liked the fact that they look very happy and connected – like the friends in my book would be, and though not exactly as I had imagined them, they are pretty close. When I posted some options on facebook, many people preferred the three friends to the sun-bathers.
In the end, I went with my gut and chose the sun bathers. Although I liked the happy look of the three women, the book is a bit more ‘intense’ than the feeling I get from the picture of the three friends. Also, I liked the way the three women were lined up on the beach, more in keeping with my original idea of the number three being clearly represented. I may see if the other photo can be incorporated in the back cover, however.
I like that the final cover hints at elements of the book–Colosseum, the bracelet, the sunbathers. It has me intrigued!
I like it.
