Eight Issues as FellowScript Editor

In August of 2024, I agreed to take on the job of Editor-In-Chief of FellowScript magazine – a quarterly publication for members of InScribe, a Canada-wide organization for writers of Christian faith.

At the time, I remember thinking, “What have I done? I don’t have time for this!” I agreed to be the interim editor until they could find a more permanent solution. I fully expected someone else to come forward, except… somewhere between accepting the job and the publication of my first issue as editor in November of 2024, I felt a clear nudge to commit to the job for a longer term. When I expressed this to the executive (who were praying for someone to take on the editor’s job) we all felt at peace.

Then the unthinkable happened. Just when my second issue as editor was going to press in February of 2025, my daughter Eliza died.

Yet…

Despite my terrible grief, I felt God asking me to continue. Submissions for the May 2025 issue wouldn’t start accumulating until mid March. Other editorial staff were willing to step in and assist. I felt God’s assurance that He would enable me. This wasn’t my magazine. He’d been directing the ship for more than thirty years and in all that time, it had flourished.

I also realized that working on the magazine was a much-needed distraction–something I needed to give me purpose outside of my own brokenness. (Much like last week’s post about working with Darcy Jackson.) I am very thankful for that.

Eight issues later and I’m still enjoying the challenge and the creative opportunity that editing the magazine provides. It has been an important way for me to keep myself in the writing game without actually writing. (Much.) As I gradually feel the stirrings of inspiration starting to re-ignite, I am grateful for the way God has allowed me to do other things that have helped me heal. Thank you to the other members of the editorial team, too, for your hard work and dedication, and most of all for your moral and prayer support. I love and appreciate you!

FellowScript is a small magazine published by InScribe Christian Writers’ Fellowship, a Canada-wide organization for writers of Christian faith. We have members from all across the country and even a couple who are Canadians living abroad. Our subscription base is small, but we pride ourselves on producing a quality magazine full of encouragement, advice and information for Christian writers. Another mandate of the magazine is to provide an easy entry point for writers to have their work published. We give preference to our membership, which by definition means we give preference to Canadian writers, but we take submissions from others as well. We follow strict guidelines, writers whose submissions are accepted must sign a contract, and they receive payment for their work, just like they would from most other magazines. Anyone whose work is published in FellowScript magazine can legitimately say, “I’ve been published in a national magazine.”
